Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of the Electronuclear Method of Energy Production and Radioactive Waste Transmutation

Scientific Programme:
Theoretical and experimental investigations of physics processes in the uranium and thorium targets irradiated with high-energy particle and nuclear beams. Investigations on the electronuclear method of energy production and radioactive waste transmutation.

Expected main results in 2003:

Measuring the activity of isotopes generated in various targets (Pb, Pb-Bi) irradiated with 660 MeV protons. Measurements of the dose around the targets using dosimeters of various types. Measurement of the neutron and proton spectra.
Measurement on time characteristics of density distribution of a neutron flux in a subcritical system with a thermal spectrum (YALINA) driven by a pulsing proton beam (without a fissionable material). Processing of experimental data obtained on the DLNP 660 MeV phasotron and the subcritical assembly in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Simulation of the parameters of subcritical assemblies in Dubna (SAD) in combination with a proton accelerator and a neutron generator.
1. Optimization of the structure and composition of SAD. Numerical analysis of the SAD parameters. Estimation of the parameters of targets-converters, spatial and energy distribution of neutron fields in SAD components, including estimation of the influence of sizes of the primary target and its arrangement in the SAD volume as well as composition and geometry of SAD on the characteristics of the installation.
2. Calculation of energy release in constructional elements of SAD.
3. Calculations related to preparation of SAD experiments. Calculations of neutrons transport for the purpose of optimization of planned experiments and determination of the neutron fields distribution in experimental channels.
4. Calculations related to determination of dependence of the effective coefficient of neutrons multiplication K_{ef f} upon modifications of the SAD structure. Estimation of the kinetic characteristics of SAD on the basis of calculating the time oscillations K_{ef f} in various operating modes of the installation.
5. Calculations of the radiation shielding of the installation in a direction of penetrating a proton beam, estimation of the ionizing radiation dose around the SAD.
6. Preparation of cross-sections and carrying out calculations of the induced activity in SAD elements and radiation shielding.
