Study of the Hadron Structure in the Experiments with the COMPASS (NA58) and HERMES (DESY) Spectrometers

Scientific Programme:
- Study of inclusive and semi-inclusive processes in deep inelastic scattering of muons and electrons on polarized and unpolarized targets.

- Search for effects of nucleon strange sea and gluon polarization in the production of

hyperons and charm mesons.

- Determination of the quark spin, gluon and quark orbital momenta contributions to the nucleon spin.

- Sum rule tests for spin-dependent structure functions of the proton and neutron, QCD tests.

- Spectroscopy of charmed hadrons.

- Construction of a hadron calorimeter, a muon system and straw tracking chambers for the COMPASS spectrometer.

- Construction of minidrift chambers for HERMES spectrometer.

- COMPASS software development and support of the CERN program library at JINR.

Expected main results in 2003:

Commissioning of the calorimeter control system for COMPASS.
Commissioning of the muon wall detectors together with RO system for COMPASS.
Participation in commissioning of RICH for COMPASS.
Construction and commissioning of tracking detectors (straw and MWPC) for COMPASS.
Construction and commissioning of the minidrift chambers for HERMES.
Development of the COMPASS and HERMES software and simulations.
Participation in data taking and analysis with COMPASS.
Participation in data taking and analysis with HERMES.
Theoretical studies of spin effects in COMPASS and HERMES.
Implementation of the COMPASS software at JINR.
Participation in upgrading of RICH1 and in the design of RICH2 detectors.
