Study of Multiple Production in 4-geometry and Construction of the SPHERE Spectrometer. First-Line Experiments at the Nuclotron

Scientific Programme:
Development of the SPHERE spectrometer and experiments on cumulative particle production and correlated phenomena. Search for manifestation of quark-gluon degrees of freedom in collisions of relativistic nuclei and phase transitions in nuclei (SPHERE, FASA, PHENIX) and exotic resonances. Study of nuclear multifragmentation processes and hyper- and

-nuclei production (FASA, GIBS). The Nuclotron internal target experiments: research using a two-arm EMCalorimeter and deuteron spin structure investigation (SPHERE). Cumulative particle production by tenzor polarized deuterons. Asymptotics in nuclear collisions and nucleon clusters. Development of data base for bubble chamber statistics. Detector development for relativistic heavy-ion experiments at the SPS (NA49), RHIC (PHENIX). Investigation of the ³He spin structure at RIKEN. Construction of some prototypes of front-end electronics for primary processing; some prototypes of a logic processor; interface and network modules to organize a multichannel multiprocessor data acquisition system. Some developments of VBLHE-oriented architectures to construct a data acquisition system. Obtaining the data on heat generation, neutron multiplication, balance and spectrum, fission and radiation capture integrals in the model uranium blanket and target-converter of the installation "Energy plus Transmutation". Studies of transmutation cross sections of radioactive nuclear wastes (iodine-129, neptunium-237 and plutonium-239).

Expected main results in 2003:

Publication of the results on studying the tenzor analyzing power A_yy for the reaction of deuteron fragmentation into cumulative pions at nonzero angles.
Publication of the results on studying the A_t-dependence of the reaction cross-section of deuteron fragmentation into pions in the twice cumulative region.
Investigations of the properties of nuclear multifragmentation induced by relativistic carbon ions as a function of beam energy. Beam tests of the upgraded 4-setup (FASA-2).
Study of exotic nuclei interactions (He, Li, B neutron deficit isotopes) in emulsions including irradiations of emulsion stacks with newly prepared beams of secondary nuclei and data analysis.
Measurements and data analysis of spin effects of neutral meson production in polarized proton interactions. First experiments using the Nuclotron internal target to search for exotic eta-nucleus and multiquark state production.
Support of operation of the system for measuring the beam intensity at the Nuclotron.
Design of prototypes of two nuclear electronic devices.
Design of prototypes of two devices in basic bus standards.
Data taking from the stand of the CMS muon chambers.
Investigation of neutron and fission fragment spectra in the target and blanket of the installation "Energy plus Transmutation". Study of transmutation cross-sections of radioactive wastes.
Investigation of the deuteron and ³He spin structure by using a polarized deuteron beam at the Nuclotron and RIKEN.
Preparation of detectors for the LNS and PHe3 projects.
Preparation of the prototipe of aerogel counters for PHENIX experiment at RHIC.
Participation in data taking and data analysis on PHENIX experiment.
