Nuclear Physics with Neutrons - Fundamental
and Applied Investigations

• Obtaining of new experimental data on characteristics
  of the neutron as an elementary particle:


• Carrying out of the first in the world experiment on direct measurement of n,n-scattering length at the JAGUAR reactor, Snezhinsk. Start of measurements.
  
  
• Start of measurements of n,e-scattering length b_ne at the neutron source in Troitsk.
  
  
• Experimental verification of equivalence principle for the neutron.
  
  
• Preparation of the first in the world experiment to search for neutron-mirror-neutron oscillations.
  
  
  Experiments with ultracold neutrons in ILL:
  
  
• Investigation of interactions of neutrons with nanoparticles. Examining of possibility of construction of UCN source of ultrahigh density.
  
  
• Investigation of interactions of UCN with matter. Investigation of "weak" UCN heating on the surface of solids; measurement of inelastic and quasi-elastic UCN scattering spectra; investigation of promising cryogenic moderators for UCN generation.
  
  
  Investigations of violations of fundamental symmetries in neutron-nucleus interactions:
  
  
• Preparation of equipment for polarization and its measurement on La target. Growing of single-block monocrystal LaAlO₃ to create dynamically polarizable nuclear target for the experiment to verify time invariance in interactions of polarized epithermal neutrons with polarized nuclei. Modernization of a cryostat for the polarized nuclear target.
  
  
• Measurement of P-odd effect in total cross-section in interactions of cold polarized neutrons with natural lead and asymmetry of gamma-quanta from the reaction ¹⁰B(n,) ⁷Li ^{* 7}Li in ILL.
  
  
  Investigations of properties of atomic nuclei:
  
  
• Search for rare modes of nuclear fission. Experiments to study ternary and quaternary fission. Search for ternary collinear decay. Preparation of experiment to search for quinary decay.
  
  
• Preparation of experiments to study vibrational resonances of fissioning nuclei and to measure fission cross sections of minor actinides at the n-TOF source (CERN).
  
  
  Preparation of experiments at IREN:
  
  
• Precision measurements of total neutron cross section on nuclei with rare resonances to obtain new information on hypothetical long-range potential in the neutron-nucleus system.
  
  
• Search for negative p-wave resonances of lead isotopes and their relation with parity violation effects in interactions of polarized neutrons with lead.
  
  
• Investigation of dynamics of superfluid-normal transition in heated nuclei using precision gamma-spectroscopy to analyze two-quantum cascades of radiative decay of fissioning nuclei induced by thermal and resonance neutrons.
  
  
• Investigation of interference effects in reactions ³⁵Cl(n, p) ³⁵S and ¹⁴N(n, p) ¹⁴C in the resonance neutron energy range.
  
  
• Measurement of neutron cross-sections for purposes of reactor engineering, transmutation of nuclear wastes and nuclear astrophysics.
  
  
• Construction of a test bench for applied research at IREN.
  
  
  Applied research:
  
  
• Development of nuclear-physical techniques for element analysis of solids on accelerated particle beams of the electrostatic generator EG-5.
  
  
• Mathematical and physical modeling and calibration of neutron detectors for space vehicles MSL 2009 and LRO 2008. Laboratory models of LEND and DAN devices aimed at detecting neutrons from the lunar surface (LEND) from an orbital vehicle and from the Mars surface (DAN) from a Mars lander will be calibrated. Mathematical modeling of flight models of the devices will be carried out.
  
  
• Project REGATA. Investigation of atmospheric heavy metal depositions in a number of regions of Central Russia and in the Southern Urals, in Bulgaria, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Macedonia, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, South Korea, Turkey and Vietnam. Continuation of investigations using NAA in ecology, medicine, biotechnology and development of new materials (synthesis of fine-crystalline diamonds).
