The knot polynomials: where is the physics?

We attempt to clarify the main ideas around the famous paper by E. Witten “Quantum field theory and Jones polynomial”. This subject of modern mathematical physics is extremely popular, but it thought to be rather hard for presentation and thus is rarely discussed in essence. We think that the basic background and the key ideas in this field are not so mysterious and are quite available to the curious side observer.

Мы постараемся разобраться в основных идеях  знаменитой работы Э.Виттена “Квантовая теория поля и полином Джонса”. Этот сюжет чрезвычайно популярен в современной математической физике, однако считается весьма трудным для изложения  и потому редко обсуждается по существу. На наш взгляд, ключевые предпосылки и основные идеи в этой области не так уж загадочны и вполне доступны для любопытного взгляда со стороны.
