CERN - JINR 1999 European School of High-Energy Physics The 1999 European School of High-Energy Physics Casta-Papiernicka, Slovak Republic 22 August - 4 September 1999

The 1999 European School of High-Energy Physics (formerly the CERN-JINR School of Physics) will be organized jointly by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russia, together with the Office for the Strategy of the Development of Society, Science and Technology of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Education of SR and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The basic aim of the School is to teach various aspects of high-energy physics, but especially theoretical physics, to young experimental physicists, mainly from the Member States of CERN and of JINR.

The Schools of Physics are designed to give a survey of up-to-date information, rather than to be a training course. An outline of each of the lecture courses and reading lists will be sent to selected students during April 1999 together with their letters of acceptance.

Lecturer's outline

Date and place of the School

The seventh European School of High-Energy Physics will be held in the Casta-Papiernica Centre of the Slovak Parliament, the Slovak Republic, from Sunday, 22 August to Saturday, 4 September 1999.

The Centre is located in the beautiful natural environment of the protected region of the Lower Carpathian Mountains, about 40 km north of Bratislava and only 11 km away from the town of Modra, which is traditionally famous for its wine.

Accommodation

All those participating in the School will be lodged in suites. Each suite has one sitting-room, two double rooms, a bathroom, WC and a telephone, which can also be used by participants for outgoing calls managed through the telephone exchange of the Centre. Incoming calls can be received in the suites.

Laundry facilities are available and require extra payment.

Some excursions will be organized and one or two afternoons will be free.

Scientific programme

The preliminary scientific programme is as follows:

There will be around 30 lectures in all, each lasting about 60 minutes, followed by a 15-minute period for questions and discussion. Discussion sessions, which are intended to clarify points which may be obscure from the lectures, will be held on most days in the afternoon. Students will be encouraged to present their current research work in the form of a special poster session which it is planned to hold on Thursday, 26 August.

Discussion sessions, which are intended to clarify points which may be obscure from the lectures, will be held on most days in the afternoon and last about 75 minutes.

Language

The working language of the School will be English. Participants should therefore have a good understanding of English to enable them to benefit from the School.

Proceedings

Proceedings for the School will be published as a CERN Yellow Report in the spring of 2000. Each participant will receive one copy free of charge.

The Proceedings for the 1998 School, which took place in St. Andrews, Scotland, will be published in the spring of 1999.

Travel

Students should reach the place Casta Papiernicka, near Bratislava, for registration during the afternoon or evening of Sunday, 22 August. The School will end on the morning of Saturday, 4 September after breakfast.

The nearest international airports are in Bratislava (40 km away) and in Vienna, Austria (75 km away).

Participants will be met at Bratislava (Slovakia) and Vienna (Austria) Airports, at the Bratislava Railway and Bus Stations by specially organized buses.

Cost

The cost of the School will be about 1500 Swiss francs per student, and covers tuition, full board and lodging at the Casta Papiernicka from dinner on Sunday, 22 August to breakfast on Saturday, 4 September 1999, as well as coffee, tea or cold drinks during the morning and afternoon breaks and some social activities. It does not include travel expenses from participants' home institutes to Casta Papiernicka and back.

For participants from JINR and its Member States there are special arrangements for paying the School fee and for travel. For further information, please contact the JINR Organizing Secretary, Mrs. T.S. Donskova (see Enquires and Correspondence).

INTAS (the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union) provides funds for students working in the former Soviet Union countries.They are: Armenia, Azerbaidjan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. The Organizing Committee has good hopes that other sponsors will be found to provide funds as well for students from developing countries which are not Member States of CERN. Students from these countries are therefore encouraged to apply even if they do not have local financial support.

Details concerning the method of payment of the fee will be published in the second Bulletin.

Participation

The School is open to young physicists, preparing a PhD or equivalent in high-energy physics, with at least one year's experience working as an experimentalist. The number of students will be about 100, mostly from the CERN and the JINR Member States, but a few may come from other countries which are not members. Personal contacts and informal discussions among the participants during leisure time are an important aspect of the School. For this reason, participants are asked to note that they should not be accompanied by family members or friends.

Application

Applications to attend the School should include:

- a completed application form
- a 100-word summary
- a letter of reference from the candidate's professor or supervisor

The application form 1999 European School of Physics should be completed and sent as soon as possible.

The 100-word summary should be sent by completing the appropriate section in the WWW application form.

The submission of the completed application form must be accompanied in parallel by a letter of reference from the student's professor or supervisor (hard copy on headed paper, signed and dated), without which applications will not be considered. The author's name and the date should be indicated in the appropriate boxes on the WWW form; and the letter should be sent to the JINR Organizing Secretary (see Enquiries and Correspondence).

Students who wish to apply but who do not have a suitable browser for the WWW application form should request a hard copy of the form from one of the Organizing Secretaries (see Enquiries and Correspondence), stating clearly their name and postal address. Their 100-word summary of current work should be sent by electronic mail to the JINR Organizing Secretary.

Candidates should ensure that their application, letter of reference and 100-word summary reach the JINR Organizing Secretary by 25 March 1999.

The selection of the students will be made by the Organizing Committee; and all applicants will be informed in April 1999 whether or not they have been selected.
