FIRST CIRCULAR
International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei “EXON - 2004”
Peterhof, 5-12 July 2004

International Organizing Committee

Co-chairmen:

  Yu. Oganessian -  (JINR, Dubna)
  T. Motobayashi  -  (RIKEN, Wako)
  G. Muenzenberg -  (GSI, Darmstadt)
  D. Goutte -  (GANIL, Caen)

   Local Organizing Committee:

  Yu. Penionzhkevich -  Vice-chairman
  E. Cherepanov -  Scientific secretary
  S. Dmitriev
  K. Gridnev
  T. Donskova
  S. Lukyanov
  O. Semchenkova

The next International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei (EXON-2004) is scheduled for the first decade of July, 2004. The organizers of the Symposium are the FLNR JINR (Dubna), RIKEN (Wako-shi), GSI (Darmstadt), GANIL(Caen) – the scientific centers, where exotic nuclei have been intensively studied.

The Symposium will proceed in two stages. During the first four days (5-8 July) the sessions will be held in Peterhof, a town situated 25 km from St.Petersburg on the shores of the Finnish gulf (the Baltic sea). It is a picturesque area with its own unique climate, and it is widely known for its beautiful palaces and fountains.

During 8-12 July the sessions will be held on board a comfortable cruise ship, the route of which will lay along Lakes Ladoga and Onega, with stops at such beautiful places as Kizhi and Valaam, where one can see world famous Russian architectural attractions.

We hope that these exotic and astonishing places will promote the fruitful work of the Symposium and will improve the collaboration of physicists from different countries.

The Symposium will be devoted to the investigation of nuclei in extreme states and, in particular, at the limits of nuclear stability (from very light neutron- and proton-rich up to superheavy nuclei).

The Topics to be discussed are:

Methods of production of light exotic nuclei and study of their properties
  Superheavy elements. Synthesis and properties
  Rare processes and decays
Radioactive beams. Production and research programmes
  Experimental set-ups and future projects
Life science research at heavy ion beams (reviews).

The program will include oral and poster presentations of contributed papers. It is expected that during the Symposium there will be enough time for informal meetings at which one can discuss future prospects of joining the efforts of different scientific centers for performing joint investigations.

ABSTRACTS:
The abstracts must be typewritten using MS WORD or LaTex and submitted by e-mail before 20 March, 2004. The abstracts should not exceed 1 page and be sent in the camera-ready form (17cm x 25.5 cm).

PROCEEDINGS:
The Symposium Proceedings will be published shortly after the Symposium. The volume will only include the papers presented at the Symposium. Detailed information on the preparation of the manuscripts will be provided in the next Circular.

SYMPOSIUM FEE:
The registration fee (including accommodation and full board in Peterhof and on board the ship, coffee breaks, welcome reception, banquet, social program and transportation from the Saint-Petersburg airport to the hotel in Peterhof and back) is 700 Euro for the participants and 500 Euro for accompanying persons. The fee should be paid in cash at the registration desk upon arrival.

Partial financial support will be available for young physicists. The candidates for financial support will be selected by the Organizing Committee from participants under 35 years of age on the basis of a competition of their abstracts.
