Moscow International School of Physics 2022 started at JINR
On 24 July, the Moscow International School of Physics 2022 started at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Leading scientists, including academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, are presenting lecture courses on various fields of particle physics to young researchers, PhD students, and students. It is the third event of the series and has started in Dubna for the first time. The School is a successor to the ITEP Winter School of Physics held since 1973.
This year, LPI RAS, JINR, HSE, and Skoltech are co-organisers of the event. In addition to representatives of these organisations, researchers and students of MIPT, NRNU MEPhI, RUDN, INR RAS, BINP SB RAS, PNPI (NRC KI), Steklov Mathematical Institute of RAS, Institute of Physics of NAS of Belarus, NUST MISIS", FEFU, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tomsk State Universities, and Samara National Research University. The School language is English.
A chief researcher of the Laboratory of heavy quarks and leptons at LPI Mikhail Danilov and RAS Corresponding Member, Director of the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics JINR Dmitri Kazakov are co-chairs of the Programme Committee.
Mikhail Danilov opened the School. "In my opinion, the programme of the present School is very exciting and interesting," he noted. "World-class scientists will present their lectures to participants. The Young Scientist Forum is also planned in the programme of the School. Organisers and leading scientists will select two best reports presented by young scientists. One of them in the field of theoretical physics, and the second one in experimental physics. Authors of the reports will receive special prizes."
In his welcoming speech, Dmitri Kazakov drew participants' attention to the fact that the School is taking place in the same hall, where the JINR Scientific Council and the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the JINR Member States have their meetings. "There are portraits of outstanding scientists, founders of the Joint Institute who met and worked here, on the walls of this hall. We can say that the School is taking place in a historical place," the speaker emphasised.
The Programme of the School covers nine courses of lectures on experimental and theoretical high energy physics, as well as related fields: cosmology, machine learning, and mathematical physics.
- "Black Holes and Gravitational Waves" by E.Babichev (INR RAS);
- "Physics beyond the Standard Model" by E.Boos (MSU);
- "Machine Learning for Physicists" by E.Burnaev (Skoltech);
- "Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment" by I.Logashenko (BINP);
- "Trends in Modern Theoretical Physics for Pedestrians" by A.Marshakov (Skoltech);
- "Neutrino Physics" by V.Naumov (JINR);
- "Flavour Physics" by P.Pakhlov (LPI RAS, HSE);
- "Cosmology and Particle Physics" by V.Rubakov (INR RAS);
- "Physics at Energy Frontier" by S.Shmatov (JINR).
"The current School is mainly devoted to theoretical physics with a focus on phenomenology, i.e. the explanation of physical processes studied in various experiments including accelerator physics and astrophysical observations. Traditionally, the School brings together young scientists from all over Russia and abroad," a JINR representative of the Organising Committee of the School, Head of the BLTP Sector of Hadron Structure , Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Andrej Arbuzov commented.
One of the lecture courses, which the famous mathematician Andrei Marshakov will deliver, has an exotic title "Trends in Modern Theoretical Physics for Pedestrians". In his lecture course, the author will speak about the achievements of mathematics that can be applied in physics. According to Andrej Arbuzov, it is rare to hear about such achievements.
Lectures on neutrino physics, which is rapidly developing both around the world and at JINR, lectures on machine learning for physicists, and lectures by Academician Valery Rubakov on cosmology and elementary particle physics are among the most awaited lectures at the School.
As part of the School, the Young Scientist Forum with a poster session will take place. Participants of the Forum will present reports on their research.
Special sessions will be devoted to presentations of participants' scientific results. The Programme Committee will select talks and posters submitted for presentation. The most interesting talks will be published in the peer-reviewed journal "Bulletin of the Lebedev Physics Institute" indexed by the Web of Science platform. Authors of the posters most voted for by the School participants will receive special prizes.
