Technical tour to JINR

In August, young scientists from IBRAE RAS, the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Nuclear Safety Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The main objectives of the visit of young scientists from IBRAE RAS to JINR were to learn about the activities of the laboratories and projects implemented at JINR, to discuss possible cooperation, as well as to develop relationships between young scientists of the two Institutes.

IBRAE was established by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated November 3, 1988 in order to expand and deepen fundamental research as a basis for ensuring the safety of nuclear energy. This is the only Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences specialized in the comprehensive research on the safety of nuclear power and industry facilities. A highly qualified creative team, a unique feature of which is the optimal combination of specialists in the field of theoretical and experimental physics, nuclear energy, biophysics, radioecology, computational mathematics and informatics has been formed in the Institute. A special attention is drawn to the education of scientific personnel. The share of young (under the age of 39) employees is 49 percent of the staff of scientific departments of IBRAE RAS; the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists has been established and extensively functions at the Institute.

The activities of the Council are carried out with the extensive support of the administration of the Institute and Scientific Leader Academician L. A. Bolshov. The Council not only represents the interests of students, graduate students, young scientists, but also provides them with information support, as well as annually holds events to improve the professional skills of young specialists. One of such events is a technical tour of nuclear industry facilities.

During the tour, the young scientists of IBRAE RAS were impressed by the scope of the work implemented at JINR, the variety of underway projects and the advanced complex laboratories located on a vast territory.

I especially remember the interactive exhibition "JINR Basic Facilities", where complex physical processes are explained in detail and intelligibly using interactive techniques. The employees of IBRAE RAS also managed to learn about the NICA complex under construction at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics, the booster and the BM@N complex.

At the end of the technical tour, the staff of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of JINR presented to their young colleagues a facility for the synthesis of new superheavy elements and the research of their nuclear physics and chemical properties.
