What did the newspaper write about that day 40 years agoNo. 34 (2653) of 31 August, 1983 The year 1983 will be special in the history of the struggle of the world's peace-loving powers to prevent a global thermonuclear conflict. Scientists have a special place in the ranks of the worldwide anti-war public movement. Millions of people listen to their authoritative opinion. The traditional Week of Peace will be held at our Institute on 1 - 7 September. To this end, the Organizing Committee (chaired by Professor Yu.Ts.Oganessian), with the representatives of the national groups of JINR specialists - Cuba, Poland, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia, has developed a wide range of events. Let the Week of Peace at JINR become a vivid expression of the solidarity of the employees of our Institute with the peace movement in all countries. *** At the High Energy Laboratory, lithium and carbon nuclei were accelerated on the LU-20 injector using a CO2 laser source. As a result of this work, it becomes possible to obtain intense accelerated beams of lithium and carbon in the synchrophasotron ring. *** About three hundred young scientists and specialists of the Institute took part in seminar-schools on topical issues of modern theoretical and experimental physics: young specialists from FLNR and FLNP organized a seminar on the topic "The current state of low and average energy physics", DLNP - "High energy physics", LHEP - "Elementary particles and nuclei at high energies". Seminars "Automation of a physical experiment using a computer on a line with an experimental facility" were organized by young specialists from FLNP, "Charged particle accelerators" - Department of New Acceleration Methods, "Human-Computer Dialogue" - Laboratory of Computing and Automation. Leading scientists from JINR and scientific centres of the USSR gave lectures at the school-seminars. *** JINR was visited by the Director of the National Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of France Professor Claude Detraz. He met with the Acting Director of the Institute Professor I.Zlatev, JINR Vice-Directors Professor A.Sandulescu and Professor E.Entralgo, discussed the prospects for cooperation between research centres, learnt about the research in nuclear physics carried out in Dubna, spoke at a seminar at the Laboratory of Nuclear reactions with a report on the prospects of experiments at the GANIL accelerator complex. *** The State Committee accepted with an "excellent" rating the building of the new Dubna secondary school No.7 for 1176 students. Classrooms with modern equipment, spacious workshops, an assembly hall, two sports halls, a variety of film, television and projection equipment are at the service of schoolchildren. *** The JINR delegation with the participation of G.N.Flerov, L.A.Malov, V.A.Nikitin, E.Nadzhakov, L.B.Pikelner and S.I.Fedotov takes part in the International Conference on Nuclear Physics, held in Florence (Italy). The range of issues discussed at the Conference includes nucleon-nucleon interactions, nuclear reactions with leptons, photons and hadrons, properties of nuclear states and modes of excitation, nuclear matter under extreme conditions, new experimental techniques and accelerators of the future, others. Dubna scientists will speak at the Conference with reports. *** "An important point," is noted in the report on JINR activities for 1982, "is the commissioning of the metalwork and welding section in building No.11, with the implementation of which the capabilities of the Pilot Plant for assembling large-sized and heavy products have significantly increased."
