About what the newspaper wrote on this day 60 years agoNo. 44 (104) 30 May, 1964 The JINR Scientific Council is held in the JINR Scientists' Club, with prominent scientists from the Member States taking part in it. The third day of the session was dedicated to discussing issues related to the activities of the chamber and photoemulsion committees and automation issues. In parallel, a meeting of the low energy section was held under the chairmanship of FLNP Director I.M.Frank, where reports on the most important investigations carried out in the Laboratory recently were delivered. Reports were given by Yu.Taran, I.Motora, I.Frank, E.Lozhinsky (Poland), G.Kumpf (GDR).
At yesterday's meeting, JINR Director Professor D.I.Blokhintsev spoke about the reports to be presented at the International Conference on High Energy Physics that will be held in Dubna on 5-15 August, 1964. Vice-Director of the Joint Institute I.Ulegla made a report on the awarding of JINR prizes for the best papers of the past year. *** The working days of a small but very friendly staff of the Department of Radiochemistry of LHE are filled with interesting, exciting work, constant searches. The electronics group has recently completed the development and manufacture of a unit for measuring the dynamic characteristics of a beam. Senior engineers A.P.Tsarenkov, A.I.Mikhailov, G.P.Puchkov made a great contribution to this research. The group developed software control of a beam of accelerated particles in the acceleration cycle. At the International Conference on Radioelectronics of Accelerators, held at the end of April, the reports prepared by the department staff concerning increasing the intensity in the accelerator and improving the characteristics of secondary particle beams, increasing the efficiency of using the accelerator and the stability of the physical experiment aroused great interest. *** A meeting of the photoemulsion committee was held in Dubna for four days. Specialists from Bulgaria, Hungary, the GDR, China, Poland, Czechoslovakia and a number of institutes of the USSR took part in it. Reports on the results of joint work carried out recently were delivered and a plan for irradiating nuclear emulsions at a synchrocyclotron was approved. Some joint work carried out in different laboratories will be presented at the International Conference on High Energies. The well-known Czechoslovak physicist Professor V.Petrzilka was again elected as Chairman of the committee and K.D.Tolstov and V.M.Sidorov were Vice-Chairmen. An agreement on further cooperation in implementing research in the field of elementary particle physics using the photoemulsion technique was reached. *** An evening dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow was held in the JINR Scientists' Club. Prominent scientists participating in the ongoing 16th session of the JINR Scientific Council came to celebrate the significant date. The evening was opened by Polish theoretical physicist Edward Obryk. He gave the floor to Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Krakow, professor of the Jagiellonian University, Academician Henryk Niewodniczanski that spoke about the history of the university, its scientists, in particular noting that out of 33 Polish researchers working in Dubna, 17 specialists graduated from the Jagiellonian University. Polish films were shown at the evening. *** The final competitions for the Moscow Region Weightlifting Cup were held in Dolgoprudny. The Dubna weightlifters had the task of confirming their title as one of the strongest teams in the Moscow Region in these important competitions. All 9 members of our team performed well and evenly. The greatest success was achieved by B.Bannik and M.Omelyanenko that won second prizes in their weight categories. But of course, the best in our team should be considered Yu.Masloboev that managed to set three new Dubna records. Columnist Irina LEONOVICH, |
