JINR and FEFU: from popularization of physics to megascience projects
A meeting was held at the Far Eastern Federal University to sum up the interim results of the partnership with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The results of the implementation of the quadripartite agreement signed in 2022 by representatives of JINR, FEFU, the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) and the Government of the Primorsky Territory were discussed at it. The Joint Institute was represented at the meeting by JINR Scientific Leader Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Victor Matveev. On the same day, Victor Matveev was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the Far Eastern University.
At the meeting, it was noted that as a result of the fruitful cooperation between FEFU and JINR, significant progress was achieved in several key areas: the implementation of new educational programmes, increasing academic mobility and qualifications of scientific personnel, popularizing scientific knowledge not only in the Far East, but throughout Russia. The launch of the online undergraduate educational programme "Medical Physics" on the basis of the Institute of Science-Intensive Technologies and Advanced Materials of the Far Eastern University has become one of the most important achievements of joint cooperation.
The dynamic development of cooperation, according to Victor Matveev, is an important factor contributing to the development of a modern research infrastructure. "Young people, even while still at school, show interest in large scientific projects. It is important for them to see opportunities for development and our task is to show them these opportunities," JINR Scientific Leader emphasized.
Alexandra Reguzova, Director of the JINR Information Centre based at FEFU, spoke about the university's participation in the implementation of the Agreement on strategic cooperation and collaboration between the Governor of the Primorsky Territory, JINR, FEFU and the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Within the framework of the cooperation, focus was on the popularization of physics among schoolchildren in the Primorsky Territory. Through the joint efforts of scientists from FEFU and JINR, a number of online lectures were organized, as well as a range of presentations at events such as the Far Eastern Forum "East. Science", festival "Science 0+", All-Russian action "Scientists to Schools!", Youth scientific and educational rally "Askold and Dir" and others.
Other representatives of the parties to the Agreement on Strategic Cooperation also spoke at the meeting summarizing the interim results: Minister of Education of the Primorsky Territory Elvira Shamonova, Academician of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valentin Sergienko, as well as Vice-Rectors for Academic, Scientific and International Affairs of the Far Eastern Federal University Elena Gafforova, Vladimir Nelyub, Evgeny Vlasov and other university representatives.
At the July meeting of the FEFU Scientific Council, as part of the celebration of the centenary of physics and mathematics education in the Far East, JINR Scientific Leader RAS Academician Victor Matveev was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the Far Eastern Federal University. This title was awarded in recognition of many years of fruitful cooperation and for the scientist's significant contribution to the development of physics and mathematics education at the Far Eastern University. In his speech to his colleagues, he highlighted aspects of cooperation between FEFU and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in the field of scientific research and educational activities, as well as prospects for its development. Focus was on the construction of a megascience class facility - the Russian Photon Source (RPS) synchrotron at the Far Eastern Federal University on Russky Island (Vladivostok).
Also, at the JINR Information Centre at FEFU, Victor Matveev met with young scientists, students and teachers, as well as with Viktor Gorchakov, former rector of the Far Eastern State University (FESU) and chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Primorsky Territory. It was with the initiative of Viktor Gorchakov that fruitful cooperation between FESU and JINR began in the 1970s. In addition, as part of the visit, Victor Matveev visited the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
