Research by DLNP scientists presented at a prestigious conference
On 19-22 August, a leading topical conference on biological research in DULIA-BIO 3 Deep Underground Scientific Laboratories was held in York, UK.
The Conference was organized by STFC Boulby Underground Laboratory. It is held every five years to discuss current and future underground experiments in such areas as biology of extremophile organisms, astrobiology, biophysics and the research of living organisms under various radiation backgrounds, others. Scientists from leading deep underground scientific laboratories (LNGS, LSM, SNOLAB, SURF, LSC, CallioLab, Boulby) presented their papers.
For the first time, Russian scientists participated in this Conference: junior researcher of the Sector of Cell Molecular Genetics (SCMG DLNP) Mikhail Zarubin spoke about the joint investigations of the staffs of SCMG DLNP (Head of Sector E.V.Kravchenko) and of INR RAS (Deputy Head for Research of the BNO INR RAS) in the low-background laboratory (DULB-4900) and tunnels of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of the INR RAS.
This research at the BNO INR RAS started in 2019 and became the first biological research at Baksan that demonstrated unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research in the fields of biophysics, geobiology, biology of extremophilic organisms, astrobiology and medicine. Today, two experiments are carried out in the Sector of Cell Molecular Genetics of DLNP using the capabilities of the BNO INR RAS. Based on the results of the Conference, a White Paper is currently prepared on a collective programme of coordinated research in deep underground laboratories around the world.
