Schools

Scientific activity, mutual interest

On 25-30 August, "International School of Accelerator Physics: Cyclotrons", organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, was held in the Verbilki workers' settlement of the Moscow Region. This unique scientific event brought together more than 80 participants, including students, postgraduates and young scientists from various scientific institutions and universities.

The School, dedicated to accelerator physics, was focused on an in-depth research of the operating principles of cyclic charged particle accelerators - cyclotrons. The Organizing Committee, consisting of representatives of JINR and MEPhI, prepared a rich scientific programme. More than 25 leading lecturers from JINR, MEPhI, ITEP, NRC Kurchatov Institute and RadioMedSintez presented their reports, covering topics of fundamental and applied research on cyclotrons, theoretical foundations of accelerator physics, engineering systems and an overview of the FLNR accelerator complex.

The format of the event was mixed: more than 50 participants attended the lectures in person and another 30 people joined online. The geography of the participants was impressive - from JINR and MEPhI to the Belarusian State University and the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi.

Participants highly praised the scientific programme of the School. Elizaveta Bushmina from JINR highlighted: "Lectures from leading specialists were very diverse, the programme is structured and correctly composed. Everything was at the highest level!" Alisher Auezov from NRNU MEPhI added: "The lecturers were amazing! I especially remember the lectures of A.R.Galimov and S.L.Bogomolov. Their reports were incredibly informative and useful."

Islam Tleubay that works at the DC-60 accelerator in Kazakhstan, expressed gratitude for the "powerful productive programme" and Ilya Savin from MEPhI noted that he was glad to ask questions to the specialists about the process and progress of the work. Ivan Pishchalnikov from JINR emphasized that "the lecture material was very interesting and complete! The lecturers explained everything very clearly and I felt that I gained really useful knowledge."

The Organizing Committee of the School that included D.K.Pugachev (FLNR) and V.A.Rozhkov (FLNR) as co-chairs, as well as K.I.Berestov (FLNR), E.A.Bushmina (VBLHEP), A.S.Vorontsov (MLIT), I.A.Kolesnikova (LRB), P.A.Komarov (FLNR), V.I.Lisov (FLNR), T.V.Mamonova (FLNR), S.M.Polozov (NRNU MEPhI) and M.M.Shandov (VBLHEP) made every effort to create optimal conditions for the participants. Despite the busy scientific programme, the organizers also took care of the entertainment part of the event. The School students were able to take part in quizzes, photo contests and a contest for the best question of the day, as well as met with the famous artist Yury Kuklachev. His report on "Development of imaginative thinking" and the story about the School of Kindness made a strong impression on the participants.

Sergey Bogomolov (in photo), a lecturer at the School, expressed gratitude for the invitation: "This is a wonderful opportunity to cooperate with young professionals and students. The level of the lectures is quite high, the completeness of the information and the excellent preparation of the lecturers correspond to the international level. The audience is extremely active, it is clear that the School participants are interested in and find the new information useful!"

Mikhail Shandov noted: "The School grows both in terms of organization and location and its geography expands. It was nice to see the hall full, to observe the active engagement of the audience in the discussion. I wish the participants self-realization in the area of interest and the conquest of scientific heights and the School - further development both in terms of its geography and in terms of deepening the scientific programme."

The School also included a round table, during which participants discussed opportunities for internships, employment and cooperation with representatives of JINR, ITEP, MEPhI and RadioMedSintez. An important part of the discussion was the discussion of the future of the School, including changes in the format and attracting more participants from various scientific organizations.

The final chord of the School was an excursion to the DC-280 cyclotron, located at the Superheavy Element Factory of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions. Participants were able to see the unique facility and to learn about the systems that were discussed in the lectures.

This event is the second in a series of schools on accelerators organized by JINR. This year, the School demonstrated a significant increase in the number of participants and an expansion of the scientific programme. Holding lectures at the hotel ensured a high level of organization: a convenient conference hall, comfortable accommodation and quality food contributed to a fruitful working atmosphere.

The Organizing Committee expresses its gratitude to all participants and partners of the event. It is important to note that the best practices of previous years were used in organizing the School that allowed us to successfully cope with the tasks set. The Committee hopes that this event will become annual and take a worthy place in the scientific calendar of JINR and other research organizations.

Registration for the next School opens in May, 2025. All young researchers under 35 that wish to immerse themselves in the world of accelerator physics are invited.
