About accelerators under the sound of waves

On 15-20 September, the traditional XV International Seminar on the Problems of Charged Particle Accelerators in Memory of Professor V.P.Sarantsev was held in the Alushta Resort House "Dubna" in Crimea.

The Seminar was organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research with the participation of the G.I.Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the Problems of Charged Particle Accelerators.

As before, scientists from institutes of the Russian Federation, implementing research in the field of accelerator physics, and its applications in medicine and technology, took part in the Seminar. This time, the speakers were delegated by such scientific centres as the G.I.Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), JINR, ITEP (Moscow), the P.N.Lebedev Physical Institute (Moscow), the D.V.Efremov Research Institute of Electrophysical Equipment (St. Petersburg), the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow), the INR RAS (Moscow) and the National Research Centre "Kurchatov Institute" (Moscow), Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University (Arkhangelsk), Russian Federal Nuclear Centre - All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics (Snezhinsk), Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University (Moscow), Federal Scientific and Clinical Centre of Medical Radiology and Oncology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (Dimitrovgrad).

The scientific programme included 71 reports, 25 of which were made by scientists and specialists under 35 years of age. The winners of the reports among young scientists were: Grigory Baranov, INP SB RAS, - "Status of the Novosibirsk source of synchrotron radiation of the fourth generation SKIF", David Popov, INP SB RAS that presented two reports - "Simulation of the dynamic aperture of a synchrotron with electron cooling" and "Dynamic vacuum in a booster synchrotron" and Ilya Nikolaychuk, VBLHEP JINR, - "Results of applying string techniques to measure the position of the magnetic axis of structural quadrupole magnets of the booster and collider NICA".

A cultural and mass programme was organized for the participants of the Seminar and there were 62 of them this year. In general, the event was held in a warm, friendly atmosphere that was facilitated not only by the businesslike mood of the participants, but also by the very location of the Seminar - comfortable conditions in the Resort House coupled with the wonderful Crimean weather. The Seminar was very informative and useful, the participants were satisfied with its results, highlighted the well-coordinated work of the programme and organizational committees, thanked for the excellent organization of the event, the opportunity for personal participation and exchange of experience, as well as expressed hope for maintaining the tradition of holding this seminar.

Alexander FILIPPOV,
Larisa STOLYPINA

For reference

The goal of the Seminar is information exchange and the discussion of issues in accelerator science and technology, charged particle beam physics, development of new projects of lepton and hadron colliders, improvement of current facilities, use of accelerators for scientific and applied purposes, as well as attracting young scientists to meet tasks in accelerator technology.

Key topics:

  • projects of ultra-high energy colliders;
  • current ion accelerators and colliders;
  • cyclic electron-positron colliders;
  • generation of coherent radiation in FEL;
  • dynamics of charged particle beams;
  • new acceleration techniques;
  • accelerators for medical and applied purposes.
