On 9 March, at the age of 92, a former staff member of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Irina Grigorievna Pokrovskaya died.
She was born in 1932 in the Crimean village of Koreiz in the family of professional dramatic actors Grigory Georgievich and Evgenia Afanasievna Polikarpov. In 1954, Irina Grigorievna completed stenography courses in Moscow, receiving the specialty of a highly qualified stenographer. In June 1955, she was assigned to the post of secretary to the director of the Institute of Nuclear Problems Mikhail Grigorievich Meshcheryakov in Dubna. A year later, she was transferred to the position of secretary to the director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Venedikt Petrovich Dzhelepov. She was his constant assistant until the death of V.P.Dzhelepov in 1988.
From 1955 to 1993, Irina Grigorievna simultaneously worked as secretary to Bruno Maksimovich Pontecorvo. She extensively helped him to prepare his papers for publication, as well as the publication of the papers of Enrico Fermi. She became one of the editors of the selected papers of Bruno Pontecorvo. For 45 years, I.G.Pokrovskaya permanently prepared documentation for the meetings of the dissertation council, the Committee of Plenipotentiaries and the JINR Scientific Council. She worked on numerous occasions with the IAEA Conference Services Group in Vienna.
High professionalism allowed Irina Grigorievna to carry out a large amount of work in a variety of areas. She was always friendly to everyone, regardless of rank and position and always strived to help everyone who needed it. Thanks to these qualities, Irina Grigorievna had enormous authority among her colleagues at JINR and won the deep respect of scientists from other scientific centres in Russia and abroad. In 1987, she was awarded the Veteran of Labor medal and in 1996 - the title of Honorary Employee of the Institute.
The memory of Irina Grigorievna will remain in the hearts of her friends and colleagues for a long time.
