Nobel Prize in Physics

Research papers on quantum informatics

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the French scientist Alain Aspect, the American physicist John Clauser and the Austrian scientist Anton Zeilinger for research in quantum mechanics, namely for "experiments with entangled photons, investigation of violations of Bell's theorem and research papers on quantum informatics", Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced. Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger have carried out innovative experiments using entangled quantum states, their research has paved the way for new technologies based on quantum information.

Quantum entanglement is a phenomenon in which the quantum states of several particles are interrelated regardless of the distance between them. This phenomenon is already used in cryptography, computer technology and quantum teleportation. One can prove the quantum entanglement of particles with an experiment by checking the fulfillment of Bell's theorem (after the name of physicist John Bell). It allows one to find out about the occurrence of hidden parameters that determine the state of one of the particles in a quantum mechanical system. If the inequalities are not satisfied, the particles can be considered entangled.

The experiments that have proved the violation of Bell's theorem were first carried out by the American physicist John Clauser. The merit of the French scientist Alain Aspect is that he was able to prove that the inequalities were indeed not satisfied. The Austrian scientist Anton Zeilinger was able to experimentally show the possibility of quantum teleportation, that is, a change in the quantum state of a particle from an entangled pair when the state of another, which is far from it, changes. Entangled particles affect the state of each other, even if there are more than a thousand kilometers between them.

The awards ceremony will take place on 10 December, on the day of Alfred Nobel's death. The event will be held at an official ceremony in Stockholm that took place online in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
